Welcome to ASPE Chapter 38

Picture
The American Society of Professional Estimators Chapter 38 serves the greater Cincinnati area and surrounding communities.  ASPE is dedicated to the promotion and support of professional construction estimators in their quest to provide contractors, architects and owners with the best quality and most economical construction project that their money can buy.  To that end, we promote the development of the most intelligent and ethical means possible to develop accurate project costing and cost estimates.

Our meetings are typically held on the third Thursday of every month.  The majority of our dinner meetings take place at the Embasy Suites in Blue Ash.  Occaisionaly we do host site visits to a construction site or manufacturing facility.

Please use the 'Contact Us' link above if you have any questions about our organization.

Hopefully everyone has gotten the announcement about the National Convention this July in Philadelphia. It promises to be a good time and from the educational seminars and classes I have
seen listed; it should be a great place to learn. I hope we have a great turnout from Chapter #38!

Our April meeting topic was fantastic! We had a full house for our speakers Mr. Rob Hans PE from KYDT and Mr. Joe Vogel PE from ODOT talking about the plans for the new bridge spanning the Ohio River. We were treated to a great event full of pertinent information as well as visits from several TV channels hoping to find out something new. Our meeting made the news on all the major networks plus several radio stations! Talk about a coup for ASPE!

It is ASPE membership renewal time again. All memberships expire soon and ASPE National has sent out renewal notices to
everyone. Please take a couple minutes to renew your membership; our chapter would not be the same without each and every member. Now is also a great time to let other estimators know about ASPE. It always amazes me how many people in our line of work have no idea we even exist.

Please check out our fantastic website www.ASPE-Cincinnati.org . Click on the different tabs and be prepared to be amazed at the amount of information you will find. There is a section with several job opportunities for estimators. The word has gotten out that the best and brightest are ASPE members.

Plans are complete for our annual golf outing Friday June 7th. It is being held at Crooked Tree in Mason this year. Be sure to sign up early as foursomes are filling up quickly. Hole sponsors are all but gone, Lunch and dinner sponsors are already taken and only a few contest sponsorships remain. Advertising your company at our outing has obviously become the place to be seen!

IT’S ELECTION TIME! You should have seen the Chapter #38 ballot in your e-mail in box for our local chapter elections. We
are blessed to have several great people on the board who are running for positions plus two new faces in Mr. Mike Downing and Mr. Hank Roe. Please take the time to vote; it is your right and your privilege as a member. The people up for election donate a good deal of time to make our association great, please honor them by voting!

A big THANK YOU goes out to all the members of the board as well as the committee chairs and volunteers; these are
the people that make sure our chapter of ASPE is one of the strongest in the nation, get the word out about ASPE to our fellow estimators, publish the newsletter, manage the website and make sure we have interesting topics at our meetings. I would also be neglecting my duties if I didn’t thank our golf committee for putting together such a fantastic outing and our bowling committee for all their hard work. I also want to thank everyone who volunteers in any way for scholarships, making up baskets to raffle off at our Christmas party, and everything that is done behind the scenes to make our chapter great that doesn’t go unnoticed but sometimes goes un-thanked. Lastly, we need to thank our sponsors; our year-long sponsor Turner Construction, Our golf outing main sponsor Blue Book, all our golf outing and bowling event sponsors and all the companies that advertise on our newsletter and website. Without these companies, we would not be able to be the chapter we are. Please take a minute to look at the who’s who list of companies on the website next time you are there.

Congratulations to our own Chapter #38 member Mr. Dan Frondorf. He has been elected to the second VP position for ASPE
National. I won’t be able to call him Governor any more.

Until next month, may you always have the right bid.

Gary Gilbert

Message from the Central Plains Governor

Picture
As winter lingers and seems to not want to let spring have a turn, our ASPE fiscal year is just about 2/3 over. This last third of the year brings a number of annual events to ASPE, both at the chapter level and nationally. Our regional meetings have been completed, the spring BOT meeting has occurred and we begin to think about our national convention coming soon in July. Our new leaders will be sworn in then, but first we have to select them, so we are several days now into our national election process, and there is a full slate of candidates for the national Board of Trustees, including a replacement for me as Central Plains Governor. Locally, we will select our local leaders at the May chapter meeting, but now is the time to throw your hat in the ring if you are interested in serving your chapter. There are many opportunities to be involved, and the local chapter boards are responsible for administering chapter activities and events. Even if you decide that a board position is not for you, you can still be involved by serving on committees such as education (planning programs for the meetings, scheduling speakers, etc..), certification (requires CPE - assist members in preparing for and going through the certification process), fund raising (planning the annual golf outing and other fund raising events), awards (cataloging chapter events and activities and compiling them into an awards application for achieving certain predetermined points for important activities and chapter membership outreach), and communications (developing and transmitting chapter newsletters and website updates).

It's also that time of year when we review and consider revisions to our bylaws - proposals for these must be made by December 15 of each year, and the chapter presidents are provided with copies of them no later than May 15 so that chapter members can be apprised of them with the goal of developing a consensus for the chapter voting delegation to act upon at convention. From December til May, the proposals are reviewed for form and content and compliance with our procedures by the national Bylaws Committee and reviewed by the BOT with recommendations or suggestions being made after the spring meeting. Lastly, this is the time of year to consider attending the annual convention. It's not practical for every member to attend, so chapters can send delegates to vote on behalf of non attending members. National conventions are filled with ASPE business, educational events, meetings, professional speakers, and regional conferences, as well as opportunities to sit for the CPE exams, our national business session, and all kinds of great social and fun activities. This year we will be in Philadelphia, hosted by Chapter 61, from July 17-20. The national website has all the info for this year's great event.

Lastly, I previously mentioned the spring regional meetings that each of the five regions conducts at this time of year. This year's ASPE CP region spring meeting was held in Moline, IL on March 1-2, and was hosted by Quad Cities Chapter 71. Brian Larson, CPE and his crew planned and executed an excellent event that featured an estimating academy, great networking and fellowship, excellent food, a great meeting venue and hotel, and some very interesting and fun activities after we completed our ASPE business on that Saturday. I give my pals in Chapter 71 a huge shout out for being such gracious hosts and keen event planners - thank you all who attended this spring's meeting - it was truly one of the best ever!

Sincerely,

Daniel G. Frondorf, CPE,
